With continued support from the Springboard Trust, the Society was able to give grants to eleven expeditions travelling in 1999 to all corners of the world from Iceland to Brazil.   Some 18 applications were reviewed by the Expeditions Committee, which awarded grants ranging from £150 to £750.

University of Aberdeen - Bia Forest, Ghana '99
Students investigate how Forest Reserve and National Park status affect the abundance of selected endangered and vulnerable animal and tree species.

University of Dundee - Northern Iceland '99
Following-on from last year's successful expedition, students return to determine the rates of glacial-valley slope-evolution in the Breidafjorder region.

University of Durham - Tanzania Soils Expedition '99
Students travel here to identify the main factors affecting the adoption of bench-terracing in the West Usambara Mountains.

University of Edinburgh - Phalawan '99
Eight students travel to the Philippines to carry-out rural appraisal-surveys amongst local stakeholders in the El Nido Marine Reserve to assess land-use conflicts.

Fortrose Academy - Malawi '99
Students will study health-care and safe water-provision around Ekwendeni in the north of the country.

Fulcrum Challenge - Project '99
Twenty selected students from Scottish schools travelled to India to develop leadership skills.   Journeying by train from Delhi to the Eastern Himalayas, the team worked with Tibetan refugees in two children's villages, and undertook project-work with the children.   The highlight of the visit was a second private audience for a Scottish team with His Holiness the Dalai Lama the day after his birthday in Dharamasala.   The team then trekked to 10,000ft on the beautiful Kangera Lake.   Meeting the Ghaddi Nomads and their herds of goats, the students had their first real taste of the Himalayan foot-hills.

University of Glasgow - Rio Parana, Brazil '99
Students from the Department of Geography visit Brazil to collect ecological data on floodplain wetlands, and to evaluate functional ecology and biodiversity of the Rio Parana area.

University of Glasgow - Porisjokull, Iceland '99
Staff and students travel to Porisjokull Glacier to undertake a continuation of their glaciology, glacial geology, and geomorphology studies of the country.

N. Berwick High School - Thailand
Nineteen students will study the diversity of local cultures and ecosystems.

Perth Academy - Guyana '99
A team of 11 students will study remote Amerindian settlements in Guyana.

University of Stirling - Barito Ulu, Indonesia '99
Six students will travel here to determine the effects of severe wind-damage on the structure of a tropical lowland rain-forest.
