The RSGS Expeditions Committee, chaired by Professor Peter Furley, agreed to support the expeditions listed below, in the field in five continents during the summer of 2000.

The Mary Erskine School World Challenge Expedition, Northern Peru 2000
Designed to develop leadership skills and promote a greater understanding of the developing world, the Northern Peru 2000 Expedition carried out vegetation studies and engaged with a community project during a series of Andean treks.

Project Anuran
Four students from Edinburgh University worked with students of the University College of Belize on a study of frog and toad distribution in the Chiquibul Forest Reserve of western Belize.

Marahoué 2000
Travelling to Marahoué National Park in the Ivory Coast, students from Aberdeen University carried-out plant and bat studies designed to aid park management and develop cross-cultural links between Scottish and Ivorian researchers.

Namibia 2000
Students from Aberdeen University and the Polytechnic of Namibia visited the Waterberg Plateau Park of north central Namibia in an attempt to assess the impact of bush encroachment and the adaptability of domestic cattle.

Zimbabwe 2000
A team from Durham University, including one Scot, worked alongside Zimbabwe's Intercountry People's Aid in a study of population dynamics, housing, infrastructure and education facilities.

Arctic Norway Research Programme 2000
Scottish students took part in the ANRP 2000 Expedition, which aimed to study geomorphological land systems on the Lyngen Peninsula.

Fiji - Merchiston Rural Development Project
A group of 5th- and 6th-year pupils from Merchiston Castle School in Edinburgh studied aspects of social and economic development in the Fiji islands, as well as engaging in a rural development project to help a local community.

Bruarjokull 2000
Students from Glasgow University took part in a study of glacial geology and sedimentology at the margin of the Bruarjokull, an outlet glacier located on the NE edge of Vatnajokull, Iceland, the largest icecap in Europe.

Zahemana 2000
Four students from Edinburgh University worked with local Malagasy conservationists on plant surveys and community-sustainable development projects in the Zehemana National Park of NE Madagascar.
