In February 2002 the RSGS Expeditions Committee approved the applications listed below for grants ranging from £100 to £900, and totalling £4,050.

University of Edinburgh - Project Anuran - Belize
Four students continue the study of amphibian populations carried-out on two previous expeditions based at the Las Cuevas Research Station in the Chiquibul Forest in the Maya Mountains.
University of St Andrews - Iceland 2002
The formation of icebergs at Breidermerkurjokull in south-east Iceland is the focus of research being undertaken by four students during six weeks in the field.
Trinity Academy - Morocco Field Trip 2002
Eleven 5th and 6th year students are Morocco-bound in June under the leadership of Andrew Johnstone. Land use, rural settlement, and population studies are the focus of study in Marrakech and the High Atlas.
University of Edinburgh - Zanzibar 2002
The Collaborative Reef Research Expedition heads for the west coast of Unguja Island, Zanzibar, to map and study the coral reefs. Six students will spend eight weeks in the field with two scientists from Zanzibar's Institute of Marine Science.
University of Glasgow - Tungnafellsjokull (Iceland) 2002
Under the leadership of Dr David Evans and Dr Dave Twigg, a team of eleven engineering and geography students will map accurately for the first time a plateau icefield by ground survey and photogrammetry.
Merchiston Castle School, Edinburgh - Millennium '3' Project - Fiji
Phase three of this educational exchange project takes students back to the island of Vanua Levu in Fiji, and extends the help they have given villagers in improving their supply of water.
University of Dundee - Iceland 2002
Eleven students aim to reconstruct human-environment interactions at the margins of agricultural sustainability during a three-week study in the Lake Myvatn and Asbyrgi Canyon areas of north-east Iceland.
University of Edinburgh - EUCARE Madagascar 2002
Scottish and Malagasy students join forces to map the uncharted reefs of Belo sur Mer on the coast of Madagascar. The Coral Awareness and Reef Exploration team will assist in the establishment of a World Heritage Site and Biosphere Reserve.

Twenty young students from schools throughout Scotland sign up to a year of community-based projects and an expedition to Botswana which will help develop their capacity to realise their full potential.
