Sepilok 2001, Borneo - University of Aberdeen *

Aims

  • To provide other researchers at the University of Aberdeen, and research facilities in Sabah, with data on the soil, leaf-litter invertebrates, termites, distribution of forest gaps, and extent of Orangutan damage in the various forest types of the Kabili-Sepilok Forest Reserve;
  • To help increase awareness of the Kabili-Sepilok Forest Reserve, forest conservation, and the wildlife found within the reserve;
  • Upon return to Aberdeen, to arrange a presentation and slide-show at the University and at secondary schools in the area.

Kinabalu 2001, Sabah, Malaysia - University of Aberdeen *

Aims

  • To gather distribution data through pitcher plant and bat surveys;
  • To generate baseline ecological data on endangered and vulnerable taxa;
  • To initiate and sustain a bat-monitoring group in Sabah, to build a library of echolocation calls for Microchiroptera, which will enable non-intrusive surveying of bats in Borneo, and facilitate studies elsewhere in SE Asia;
  • To provide data instrumental in the design of IUCN action plans, and assisting IUCN Species Survival Commissions.

Project Kamchatka '98, Russia - University of Cambridge, 1998 *

Goal

  • An integrated land-use appraisal of Bystrinsky Nature Park, central Kamchatka peninsula

Objectives

  • An assessment of the local land-use needs and practices
  • A study of land management, and regulation of natural resource use
  • Research into the prospects for developing the nature park, and its significance for local populations
  • Botanical studies of the birch and larch forests of Bystrinsky District
  • An appraisal of the natural and anthropogenic distrurbances to forest ecosystems and their regeneration
  • A study of the biodiversity of the flora of Bystrinsky Nature Park
  • Encourage community involvement in the park development through awareness-raising, provision of information, and discussion with local people

Project Jeriau '98, Malaysia - University of Aberdeen, 1998

Aims

  • To establish soil seed-bank composition at Jeriau, Bukit Fraser;
  • To calculate percentage of seeds in the seed-bank from seed-rain;
  • To determine source of seeds found on the plateau;
  • To determine feeding-guilds of resident and transient visitor-birds observed on site;
  • To investigate root-distribution patterns for grasses established on the plateau.

Malaysia Fruit Bat Project - University of Aberdeen, 1994

Aims

  1. to study the roles of fruit bats as potential pollinators and seed-dispersers in a Malaysian Dipterocarp forest,
  2. to assess the possiblity for continued research in bat/plant interactions.

Aims

  1. to investigate glacial depositional systems
  2. to interpret the relative chronology of glacial events in order to reconstruct past environments.

Objectives

  • To detail relationships between the lithologies in the vicinity of the Main Central Thrust of the Himalayas;
  • To establish the structural style, stratigraphic sequences, and metamorphic effects related to this major Himalayan discontinuity.
