Grants and Funding

RSGS provides funding in three separate categories:

  • Expeditions
  • Small Research Grants
  • Travel Grants

Expeditions

Groups wishing to apply for RSGS funding for their expedition are firstly asked to review the following:

Research Grants

These grants offers individual members of the Society, working in higher education institutions, a sum not exceeding £1000 in support of geographical research. This award is given specifically to help with the cost of data collection and fieldwork. Typical grants are in the region of £250 - £500. Applications are particularly welcomed from postgraduates and those early in their research careers.

Individuals  wishing to apply for RSGS Small Research Grants are asked to complete the following:

Travel Grants

The scheme is designed to provide individual members of the Society, working in higher education institutions, with grants up to a maximum of £500 in support of geographical research. Awards are given specifically to help with the cost of travel and subsistence associated with attendance at conferences and symposia where the applicant intends to present a research paper. Applications for travel grants are welcomed particularly from postgraduates and those early in their research careers, for amounts typically in the region of £250 - £500.

Individuals wishing to apply for RSGS Small Travel Grants are asked to complete the following:

PLEASE NOTE: The following conditions apply.

  1. Only applications on the relevant forms above will be accepted.
  2. Applications will not normally be considered unless references (where applicable) have been received by the closing date. The two referees should be familiar with the applicant's work, one being from outside the applicant's institution.
  3. Please note that ALL grant applications are reviewed only once each year.
  4. Completed application forms must reach the Society by 31st January and awards are only valid for one year past this date.
  5. The relevant Committees will review applications and approve the grant to be awarded at their meetings in February.
  6. No interviews will be held.
  7. All applicants will be notified in writing within one month of the relevant Committee meeting.
  8. It is regretted that no correspondence will be entered into.
  9. The grant will be paid, subject to the applicant accepting the offer, when expenditure is about to be incurred.
  10. Any grant not taken up within one year will be cancelled.
  11. Expedition Grant award-holders are required to provide a written report of the expedition and findings, small research and travel grant award-holder are requested to submit a short report (no more than two sides of an A4 sheet and including a full statement of how the money was spent, details of any other funds obtained, and a list of publications or conference papers resulting from the award) within one year of being offered an award.
  12. Money not spent as outlined in the application must be refunded.
  13. Applicants can only submit one application per year and awards cannot be made retrospectively.
  14. Re-application for the same project is not acceptable.
