St Kilda belongings on Oban Pier
1930 Photographer unknown

St Kilda was evacuated on 29th August 1930 and the inhabitants taken to Oban. Here the St Kildans belongings are stacked on the pier at Oban and household chairs, table, bed frame and mattress can be seen. At the time of the evacuation there were only thirty six residents, as population numbers had reduced over years from a peak of one hundred and ten in 1851. The evacuation had been discussed since 1875, and the islanders were sad but not sorry to be leaving. The islanders were evacuated on the Harebell, whilst the sheep were taken in the Dunara Castle with the journey to Oban taking seventeen hours.
