St Kilda church

The L shaped building in the foreground above is the church and schoolroom, with the left hand part of the building being the church, and the right hand part of the building being the school room. The church was built in 1830 and the school room added in c.1897-1900. The church bell which came from the wreck of the SS Janet Cowan in 1864 can be clearly seen hanging in its wooden frame. The ship was built at Greenock in 1861 and was wrecked in April 1864 during a voyage from Calcutta to Dundee. The pulpit in the church was the largest in the Western Isles, from which ministers preached long sermons. On either side of the pulpit was an enclosed pew, one for the church elders, and the other for visitors. The building behind the church is the manse, where the Minister lived, built at the same time as the church at the cost of £600.
