Dunsky Castle 1816

This dramatic and evocative aquatint is typical of the work of the artist William Daniell, whose well known publication, A Voyage round the Coasts of Scotland and the adjacent Isles, containing exquisite aquatinted views of coastal scenes round Scotland, was published between 1815 and 1822.

Dunsky (today Dunskey) Castle was built in the 16th century, and sited splendidly on a promontory above Portpatrick, a small port and former ferry point for Northern Ireland, located on the west coast of the Rhinns of Galloway. The 16th century Castle, built by the Adairs of Kinhilt and later modified, had but a short life and was already in a ruinous state by the late 17th century, though the remains are still of considerable extent.
