Glasgow 1884
The Clyde from the Sailors’ Home, in Deas, J. 'Clyde' 1884

This delightful view shows a scene on the River Clyde during the heyday of the sailing ship. The view shows the bustle of the quay life with numerous horses and carriages bowling along and, in mid view, a paddle steamer dramatically outlined against a white band of light across the water. James Deas, the author of the book in which this view occurs, was a notable Glasgow engineer, and a tide gauge designed by him and used to record the tides along the Clyde can be found in the Hunterian Museum.
