The Broomielaw, in Deas, J. 'Clyde' 1884

Glasgow 1884

This delightful view shows a scene on the River Clyde during the heyday of the sailing ship and the paddle steamer. The Columba is just about to cast off with its passengers strolling the deck or sitting and surveying the busy scene. James Deas, the author of the book in which this view occurs, was a notable Glasgow engineer, and a tide gauge designed by him and used to record the tides along the Clyde can be found in the Hunterian Museum.
