Projects

Much of the work of the Society is now progressed in terms of specific projects.

Ongoing Projects

  • Spring Clean 2012 Appeal!
The RSGS has a wonderful collection of tens of thousands of historical and contemporary maps and atlases, books and papers, photographs and drawings, scientific instruments and artefacts - a valuable part of Scotland's heritage. Much of the collection is now housed in the Fair Maid's House visitor centre, newly accessible to RSGS members and the public. Please help us.
  • The World at Your Feet!
We need your help to inspire the next generation of geographers
We are developing a project to paint a large world map (approx 8m x 6m) onto school playgrounds across Scotland, as an inspirational teaching aid. We think this is a fantastic opportunity to help engage children's curiosity and encourage a broader understanding of our world. But we need your help to make it happen. Every donation will make a difference - the more money we raise, the more work we can do. Please help us.
  • Fair Maid's House Education and Information Centre
We have now opened Britain's first Geographical Education and Information Centre in Perth's most iconic building - a newly refurbished and restored The Fair Maid's House. This features displays on the connections between people and the environment, the geography of Scotland and the role of Scottish explorers across the world, together with the fascinating history of this remarkable 15th century survival.

Completed Projects

  • RSGS 125th Anniversary (completed 2009)
We ran a series of public lectures to celebrate our 125th Anniversary, including explorer Pen Hadow and mountainer Doug Scott
  • Images for All (HLF-funded, completed 2008)
Through a combination of volunteer effort, project staff and professional services funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund, we have been able to conserve, restore and catalogue a substantial proportion of the Society's large collections of atlases, maps and images.
