Stephen Venables recounts his first ever visit to Africa, helping a team climb the continent’s three highest mountains. They approached the tallest, Kilimanjaro, by the rarely climbed Umbwe route. On Mt Kenya they followed the rock climb up Nelion which was first climbed by Eric Shipton and Percy Wyn-Harris in 1929. But the real higlight of the trip was the journey across Uganda to the Rwenzori – the Mountains of the Moon – where the equatorial high altitude vegetation is at its most surreal and fantastic. Despite almost constant rain, snow and low cloud, the team succeeded in following the Duke of Abruzzi’s route to the highest summit – Margherita.
