Geobotanist Tom Dargie looks back on some of the changes he has seen: major habitat turnover since 1975 in southern Spain, Amazon deforestation and loss of a vital carbon sink, destruction of cloud forest habitat in the Colombian Andes, links golf as an existential threat to UK coastal dunes. His interest has always been in vegetation as an indicator of the state of the local environment and humanity’s care or otherwise of the landscape, and he has used a wide range of technologies to understand and pick apart the factors driving environmental change.
