Our 2020-21 season of regular Inspiring People talks has now come to an end, but that doesn't mean that our public events have stopped! In April, we presented our prestigious Geddes Environment Medal to Professor Tim Flannery. And in May, we will hold a special event with Lord Jack McConnell speaking about 'Building Back Better'.

To help with the Curriculum for Excellence, we have produced another six Chalk Talks, virtual lessons in Higher and National 5 Geography topics, for school students (and others!) to study and revise at home.

And to learn more about climate change in advance of COP26 coming to Glasgow, particularly if you are a middle or senior manager in any business operating in Scotland, consider signing up for our short and effective Climate Solutions Accelerator course.
Geddes Environment Medal
On Wednesday 21st April, we were delighted to host a fascinating evening of conversation between Professor Iain Stewart, Dr Vanessa Collingridge, and Professor Tim Flannery, an internationally acclaimed scientist, explorer and conservationist, and one of Australia's leading and award-winning writers on climate change.

To round off the event, we presented Professor Flannery with our Geddes Environment Medal. In a later interview with our Writer-in-Residence, Jo Woolf, he said, “Can I just say how immensely proud I am to have this Medal. It’s just extraordinary to me that I would be thought of in the same breath as Greta Thunberg and the other recipients!”

You can read Jo's wonderful interview in the summer edition of The Geographer, which will be distributed to our members in early June, and later posted on our website at www.rsgs.org/the-geographer.
Building Back Better
The UK will be host to major international discussions in 2021, with the G7 in June, an Education Summit in July, and COP26 in November. But will 'Building Back Better' be more than a slogan? Can the G7 lead the way for vaccine equity, post-pandemic educational and economic recovery, and then real progress towards net zero in Glasgow?

In this public lecture, Lord Jack McConnell will draw on international experiences, including in Malawi, to set out the issues to be addressed and the choices that must be made if we are to see an equitable and sustainable recovery.

The event begins at 7.30pm on Wednesday 19th May 2021; tickets are £5 for RSGS Members, U18s and Students, or £8 for others.

Jack McConnell was First Minister of Scotland (2001-07) then UK Special Representative for Peacebuilding (2008-10) before being appointed to the House of Lords. Amongst his many current responsibilities, which are particularly related to international peacebuilding and sustainable development, he is Co-Chair of the UK All-Party Parliamentary Group on the UN Global Goals for Sustainable Development, Vice-President of UNICEF UK, and Chair of the McConnell International Foundation.
Chalk Talks
Wow!! Another six RSGS Chalk Talks!

The fantastic Geography teachers at Dollar Academy, Morrison's Academy, Kilgraston School and Speyside High School have been particularly busy over the past couple of months, creating a series of virtual Geography lessons to help students working at home. And we have been able to coordinate the project and arrange for the videos to be professionally produced thanks to the generous donations we received from many members and supporters in response to our 'A Helping Hand for Schools' appeal last autumn. Thank you all!

We now have nine videos for Higher Geography - the latest two are for the Urban and Rural topics. And we have eight videos for National 5 Geography - the new lessons are on Coastal Landscapes, Upland Limestone, Rivers and Their Valleys, and Health.

All the lessons are available on our website, at www.rsgs.org/chalk-talks - well worth a look!
