A Thrilling Line-up for September
In this edition:

We share the first talks in our 2022-23 Inspiring People talks programme, our newest RSGS Honorary Fellows, and give thanks to some valued Board Members. We also share the autumn edition of The Geographer magazine: Wheredunnit?, give details about upcoming Doors Open Day, and our next Meet the Experts event on the future of water.
Christopher Horsley
Having explored some of the most active volcanoes in the world, adventurer Christopher Horsley is drawn to the fires that created our planet. Capturing the beauty of these naturally destructive creators has led him closer to the edge of volcanic craters around the world than most people would dare. From abseiling over 400 metres to collect fresh lava samples from some of the most inaccessible places in the world to encountering armed rebels on volcanic slopes. Book now to secure your ticket for this fascinating face-to-face talk through the 'tickets' button below! Entry is free for RSGS Members, so join now at rsgs.org/join-us.

Sir David Hempleman-Adams FRSGS
For our first online Inspiring People talk we will be screening an interview followed by live Q&A with Sir David Hempleman-Adams, who in his extraordinary lifetime of global expeditions, has trekked solo to the North and South Poles; flown a hot air balloon single-handedly across the Arctic and the Atlantic Oceans; and conquered the highest mountains on each of the world’s seven continents. He has battled against the elements in the harshest climates known to man, often steeling himself against illness and injury; and in doing so he has proved that, if you have a childhood dream of adventure, you should never let it go. We were delighted to award RSGS Honorary Fellowships to a number of highly deserving individuals: Claire Mack (top left), Chief Executive of Scottish Renewables, for her dedication to implementing renewable energy across Scotland; Galina Toteva, Robert Fleeting and David Geddes (top right), for their invaluable contributions over the last six years in delivering the Climate Solutions courses; Professor Andrew Dugmore (bottom right), for his contribution to world-leading environmental geography, and human-environment interaction in Iceland and the North Atlantic; and Tim Ambrose (bottom left), for his invaluable work as RSGS Treasurer for over eight years, and for his unwavering support of the Society throughout.

We were delighted to have the opportunity to thank Tim Ambrose and Alister Hendrie, as they step down after many invaluable years as RSGS Board Members. Alister has served as Co-Chair of the Board since 2012, providing great expertise, knowledge, and guidance during that ten year period, and we are grateful for his continued supportiveness, help with strategic planning, and kindness.  Tim has served as Treasurer since 2013 and has been incredibly generous with his expertise and time throughout. He has brought so much kindness and confidence to the Board, and has been instrumental in helping the Society develop. We are extremely grateful for Alister and Tim’s contributions over the last decade; for their part in making the last few years as successful as they have been for the Society, allowing it to grow into what it is today.
We are excited to announce the release of the newest edition of our magazine, The Geographer! The theme of this edition is Wheredunnit?- investigating the geography and landscape of fictional crime. We include articles from leading crime fiction authors such as Ann Cleeves, Val McDermid and Doug Johnstone, considering the sense of place that drives the backgrounds and narratives of their popular novels.

In light of the ongoing food crisis we also explore the topic of food insecurity, and how this has been intensified by environmental factors such as droughts, floods and heatwaves, and human factors such as Covid-19 and the war in Ukraine.

In anticipation of the new magazine, RSGS Writer-in-Residence Jo Woolf investigates links between renowned crime writer, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, his characters and RSGS in our latest blog.

RSGS members can look out for magazines arriving next week, along with programmes for our 2022-23 Inspiring People talks! To receive future editions of our highly regarded quarterly magazine, join as a member now at rsgs.org/join-us.

Doors Open Day on Saturday 17th September (11:30am - 4:30pm) will provide an opportunity for RSGS members and non-members alike to visit our headquarters in the Fair Maid’s House in Perth. With a European Heritage Days theme of ‘sustainability’, and a VisitScotland theme of ‘Year of Stories’, we will feature a special display put together by the RSGS Collections Team, titled Roots, Routes and RSGS, using our visitors book as the centrepiece and focal point from which rich stories flow. Everyone is welcome and entry is by donation!
Join us on Tuesday 6th September from 2pm on Teams for our latest Meet the Experts event where we will be joined by Professor Andrew Tyler, Hydro Nation Chair from the University of Stirling, and Jon Rathjen FRSGS, Deputy Director of Water Policy, Climate Change & Energy Directorate at the Scottish Government. Together they will consider the future of water, and engage participants in a lively discussion about this important topic.
