A New Season
Welcome to the new edition of the RSGS e-news, featuring:

The recent International Geographical Societies Gathering ahead of the UN COP15 on Biodiversity and the upcoming screenings of Scotland: Our Climate Journey at RSGS Local Groups.

We share the corrected dates for the reopening of the Fair Maid's House Visitor Centre and reflect on our Inspiring People talks programme for 2021-22. And, we are delighted to share that our CEO Mike Robinson received the Cairncross Trophy for his services to Perth.
On Wednesday 30th March, the Royal Scottish Geographical Society convened an international online gathering of the world's geographical societies ahead of COP15 of the UN Convention on Biological Diversity in Kunming. In attendance were 50 participants from 30 different countries, coming together to explore the ways in which the geographical community can address the vital issue of the biodiversity crisis. The gathering heard provocations from several international speakers including Elizabeth Maruma Mrema (pictured), Executive Secretary of the UN Convention on Biodiversity, Hindou Oumarou Ibrahim, Coordinator of the Association of Indigenous Women and Peoples of Chad, and Jojo Mehta, Executive Director of Stop Ecocide International.

We currently have three scheduled live screenings of Scotland: Our Climate Journey with RSGS Local Groups!

- Wednesday 4th May at 7:30pm at the University of Stirling
- Monday 9th May at 7:30pm at the Old Kirk in Kirkcaldy
-Tuesday 10th May at 7:30pm at the Salutation Hotel in Perth

Admission to all screenings is by voluntary donation to help support the work of the Society. Tickets are available through Eventbrite or at door. Tickets for all events can be booked at: RSGS.org/Events.

Scotland: Our Climate Journey tells Scotland's climate journey through the past, present and future, narrated by a wide range of individuals from across the country from different sectors, offering different perspectives, but all contributing in the battle against climate change. This film will leave viewers with a sense of hope, inspiration, and renewed strength for the work ahead. If anyone would like to host or arrange a screening of the film, please get in touch with the office at enquiries@rsgs.org.

We are delighted to announce that we will be reopening the Fair Maid's House Visitors Centre in Perth at 1pm on 6th May 2022 for the first time since the start of the pandemic. We look forward to opening our doors and welcoming you all back to the Geographical Heart of Scotland!

After 6th May, we plan to open every Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 1pm - 4:30pm. We apologise for any confusion caused by our previous email after we gave the wrong days.

On Wednesday we hosted the last talk of our Inspiring People talks programme for 2021-22 with Professor Rosalind Bryce. Thank you to everyone who joined us at our Inspiring People talks this season, and for your ongoing support throughout. We are delighted to have been able to successfully host a total of 24 talks with more than 10,000 households in attendance over the season. We are planning to retain some online talks when the season starts again in September.

Just some of our highlights this year have been our own Explorers-in-Residence Luke and Hazel Robertson and Writer-in-Residence Jo Woolf, as well as cave diver Jill Heinerth, Active Nation Commissioner Lee Craigie, Kenyan hiker Gitonga Wandai, polar explorer Myrtle Simpson, mountaineer Stephen Venables, and many more - but we're sure you will have your own favourite. Catch up on many of these talks at www.rsgs.org/videos.

We now look forward to planning our next programme, and returning to face-to-face talks at our Local Groups, as circumstances and venues allow.

Our Chief Executive, Mike Robinson, was delighted to receive the Cairncross Trophy for his services to Perth, from Joe Cairns, President of the Rotary Club of Perth, at a lunch at McDiarmid Park. The award is given in recognition of outstanding citizenship. In Mike’s case it was recognition for his contribution as Chief Executive at RSGS, his promotion of community sport and wellbeing through his Chairmanship of Live Active, “…and for the many other services he willingly and freely gives to the community of Perth.”
