We have now released the newest edition of The Geographer! The theme of this edition is People Pressure - investigating the topic of population and its effect on planetary health, including population growth and trends, consumption, pressures and policies, and sustainability. We include interviews with new Geographer Royal for Scotland Professor Jo Sharp, and new RSGS President Professor Dame Anne Glover. And with the ongoing Russian invasion, we also reflect on the evolving situation in Ukraine.
In March, the second gathering of the international geographical community was convened by RSGS with the Royal Geographical Society, Royal Canadian Geographical Society, and International Geographical Union, to explore ways in which the geographical community can work together to better address the vital issue of the biodiversity crisis.

The final report from this gathering has now been released, recording the big ideas from provocations and discussions, and outlining key recommendations to encourage further action on the biodiversity crisis. Read the full report here

We were pleased to present RSGS Honorary Fellowship to author and conservationist Clifton Bain, for his crucial work towards the conservation of peatlands, and promoting public awareness of their importance. Clifton began his career in nature conservation with the RSPB in 1984, allowing him to study birds and their habitats across the UK and engage in high-level campaigning on climate change and biodiversity. Over the last ten years Clifton has worked as Programme Advisor of the IUCN UK Peatland Programme on environmental policy and advocacy to promote the conservation of peatlands. He has also given public talks and written books about peatlands and other ecosystems, highlighting their value to people’s physical and mental health as well as to biodiversity and climate action.

Join us for our next Meet the Experts event on Tuesday 14th June from 3pm - 4:30pm on Zoom, where we will be joined by Michael Cook, CEO of Circular Communities Scotland, Kim Pratt, Circular Economy Campaigner for Friends of the Earth Scotland, and Peter McCafferty, Circular Economy Business Support Manager at Zero Waste Scotland. Together they will discuss how the Circular Economy works in businesses and organisations, and The Circular Economy Bill in Scotland that is currently out for consultation.
