Christmas Time, Mistletoe and Gin
Get tickets now for our event with anthropologist Alice Roberts in Glasgow in January, or grab a bottle of special limited edition RSGS Explorer's Gin. The latest Geographer, themed on the power of trees, is winging its way to Members this week, and we take a moment to celebrate our newest RSGS Honorary Fellows James Bluemel and Shahbaz Majeed.
Alice Roberts - Ancestors
Saturday 20th January at 7:00PM

Professor Alice Roberts will be speaking at the University of Strathclyde on Saturday 20th January for her talk titled Ancestors, based on her book of the same name.

What can a grave tell us about a person and past lives? From the Bronze Age to the Romans and the Anglo-Saxons, Alice Roberts will explore how burial archaeology sheds light on ancient societies, and look at how genetics is completely revolutionising what we know about the past.

Tickets for this event are selling quickly, so be sure to book now to secure a ticket!

RSGS Explorer's Gin

RSGS has teamed up with Persie Distillery to create a limited edition ‘RSGS Explorer’s Gin’- just in time for Christmas!

Hand-crafted in Perthshire, the geographical heart of Scotland, this special edition has been created in small batches using natural botanicals, resulting in a quality that can’t be replicated at large scale. It has top notes of Caledonian pinewood followed by the warmth of peppery heather. The result is a fresh, grassy gin with a softly spiced finish.

Available to buy now for home delivery or for click-and-collect from RSGS HQ in Perth or Persie Distillery!

The Geographer - The Power of Trees

RSGS Members can look forward to receiving the Winter edition of The Geographer this week! This edition is themed around 'the power of trees', looking at future forests and fragile landscapes. Topics explored in this edition include reviving native woodlands, the relationship between forests and the climate, the threat of diseases such as phytophthora, the important role trees play around the world, and of course we also feature some stunning imagery too!

James Bluemel FRSGS

In November we presented RSGS Honorary Fellowship to acclaimed director James Bluemel, in recognition of his exceptional compelling storytelling and multi award-winning documentaries Once Upon a Time in Northern Ireland, Once Upon a Time in Iraq, Exodus: Our Journey to Europe and Pandemic 2020. His keen sense of empathy, coupled with an amazing ability for storytelling, has allowed audiences to connect with the diverse and often challenging stories he chooses to tell.

James was awarded his Fellowship following an event at AK Bell Library in Perth, where he was interviewed by author and broadcaster Dr Vanessa Collingridge.

Shahbaz Majeed FRSGS
We were pleased to award RSGS Honorary Fellowship to landscape photographer Shahbaz Majeed (pictured with RSGS Trustee Lorna Ogilvie) at his Inspiring People talk in Dundee in November, for demonstrating a clear love and geographic understanding of the landscapes he captures on film. A Dundee local, Shahbaz is an entirely self-taught photographer, who learned many of his skills from the Dundee Photographic Society. Today he has created several books and his images have been displayed all over the world, including on the £5 polymer banknote for the Clydesdale Bank and the £20 note for the Bank of Scotland.
