This June, we are offering a specially curated tour around the Fair Maid's House in Perth about the very best of desert exploration. Expect to hear stories of adventure drawn from RSGS archives related to some of the greats of desert exploration.

During every tour you'll hear from four speakers:

From Desert Dunes to Perth: RSGS Chief Executive Mike Robinson sets the scene and introduces the event and offers a brief history of RSGS's connection to desert exploration.

Exploring the Heart of Arabia: Former Director of Outward Bound Oman, Mark Evans will reflect on his 49 day crossing of the Rub Al Khali, the largest sand desert on earth.

Delineating Deserts: RSGS Collections Team shares stunning examples of 19th-20th Century maps revealing the then knowledge of the world's deserts; full of riveting details, and the result of ground survey by intrepid explorers.

A Look into the Archive: RSGS Writer in Residence, Jo Woolf looks at desert explorers who visited RSGS as guest speakers and medal recipients. The travels of people such as Bertram Thomas and Mildred Cable will be examined in detail through original items in RSGS’s archives.
