In 1936, 17-year-old Mary Harvie left her home in Glasgow to ride her bike 500 miles around the north-west coast of Scotland. In 2021, Lee Craigie, Alice Lemkes and Philippa Battye recreated Mary’s amazing journey, turning their backs on modern-day comfort, speed and convenience to emulate her pioneering spirit. They plotted their route almost entirely off-road and set off in terrible weather conditions. They discovered that less can be more, and that by going a little slower and tolerating some discomfort, their experience became all the richer. Lee takes us on a simple, self-supported journey, and shares the revelations that journeying in this timeless way might offer us all.
