Discovery Day: Everest 70th

We had a great time on Saturday for our most recent Discovery Day themed on Everest and the Himalayas, where we were delighted to welcome so many people to the Fair Maid's House and share stories and pieces from RSGS collections about some of the greats of mountaineering. Guests heard from RSGS Chief Executive Mike Robinson, filmmaker and Everest summiteer Keith Partridge, Writer-in-Residence Jo Woolf, and Head of Collections Margaret Wilkes, who brought stories from the Himalayas to life. Everyone seemed to really enjoy the day. Look out for details of our next Discovery Day in the coming months.

The Geographer - Mashriq

We are excited to announce the release of the newest edition of the Geographer themed on Mashriq: looking at aspects of a just transition in the Middle East. Topics explored in this edition include water scarcity, sand and dust storms, the future of oil, opportunities for renewables, as well as the history of the region and it's ongoing political relationships. And as usual, you can expect to see some stunning images from this diverse region.

RSGS Members can look forward to receiving the new magazine this week!

Playground Maps
New playground maps have been installed at Dollar Academy and Grandtully Primary School by Sarah Wakeford, a painter and community artist who splits her time between painting in her studio and completing art for wellbeing projects in healthcare, education and community settings. If you work at a school or community centre and would like to have a playground map installed, please contact enquiries@rsgs.org or phone RSGS on 01738 455050.
Danny Dorling - President's Medallist
We were pleased to award the RSGS President's Medal to Professor Danny Dorling, the Halford Mackinder Chair at the University of Oxford, at his talk at the RSE, hosted by the David Hume Institute. Throughout his career as a geographer, Danny’s dedication to exploring the intricacies of social and economic differences has helped bring attention to many issues which may have otherwise gone unnoticed. His latest book Shattered Nation acts as the perfect example of this.

He has the rare ability to translate complex data into accessible narratives, and has developed highly distinctive methods of mapping inequalities, empowering individuals from all walks of life to engage with these critical topics, influencing policy decisions and sparking conversations that have the potential to bring about positive change.

Pat Brown FRSGS
We were delighted to present RSGS Honorary Fellowship to our volunteer Pat Brown, for her long-term, consistent and exceptional contributions to the RSGS Collections Team over the past 12 years. As well as having multiple careers throughout her life Pat has travelled around the world, through solo wanderings and her mountaineering exploits.
