/// Exciting New Year ///

Here at RSGS, we are kicking off the New Year with six exciting events in January alone, ensuring we remain as positive, hopeful and entertaining as possible!

On Monday 18th January, we are thrilled that Michael Palin will be speaking in a special online event, shining a light on his adventurous career to date, and his recent travels in North Korea. Some tickets are still available.

Of course, we will also be continuing with our regular 'Inspiring People At Home' events every Wednesday at 7.30pm. And GeoQuizzical will also be back, with fun prizes to be won each month...

Plus, to conclude, there's a wee reminder of some of the highlights from December, including our Medal presentation event with BBC Middle East Editor Jeremy Bowen, and our recent Climate Emergency Summit report on Food.
Michael Palin at RSGS
A special online event with Michael Palin, including live Q&A

Michael is a proud supporter of all things geographical, and throughout his childhood dreamed of travel and adventure – a dream which was realised through eight TV series, including 'Around the World in 80 Days', 'Pole to Pole', 'Sahara' and 'Himalaya'.

Recently, Michael presented a two-part series on North Korea, with an accompanying journal published in 2019. For this online event, the RSGS Livingstone Medallist will focus on his work in North Korea, shedding light on one of the most intriguing and secretive countries in the world.

Tickets only £5 for RSGS Members, Students/U18s; £8 for Visitors. Everyone welcome.

Wednesday 13th January, 7.30pm
Mark Carwardine, TV zoologist and conservationist, will provide a hilarious explanation about why you should never, ever, ever write a field guide...

Wednesday 20th January, 7.30pm

Climate Emergency Summit: Food

We held our sixth Climate Emergency Summit on Friday 27th November, focused on food. Bringing together more than 50 leading thinkers from the charity, public, and private sectors – and sponsored by The Pebble Trust – the online event generated literally hundreds of ideas to help tackle the climate emergency, under the topic of food.

The report from this meeting is now available on our website, and can be accessed by following the link below.

Jeremy Bowen FRSGS
In late December, BBC Middle East Editor Jeremy Bowen received our Mungo Park Medal during a virtual celebration for his outstanding contribution to geographical knowledge in often hazardous physical and social environments. To present his award, we were delighted to include a note of congratulations from a Vice-President of RSGS, HRH The Princess Royal, as well as some of Jeremy's BBC colleagues. We wish Jeremy our warmest congratulations, and look forward to continuing our relationship with him in the future.
