/// Springing Into Action ///

Welcome to the March edition of the RSGS e-news. There is plenty going on as ever, with several new online public events to look forward to in April and May.

There's a quick look back on the 2020-21 Inspiring People talks season which has just ended, and a look ahead to the 2021-22 season which we are already planning.

And our library of virtual Chalk Talks continues to grow, with a further eight video lessons from Higher and Nat5 Geography for school students at home!

And we are delighted to be able to share the most recent Young Geographer magazine, launched by our dynamic young all-female editorial team earlier in March.
Online Public Events
Tickets are already available for our next GeoQuizzical online quiz on the evening of Monday 12th April – join in the fun, and maybe even win a prize!

Tickets are also available for an online conference on Friday 16th April, which celebrates the bicentenary of the birth of James Croll, exploring him as a person and as a scientist, with academics and specialists drawn from the worlds of science and history.

We are planning two other events, with dates to be confirmed, so please keep an eye on emails and our website. We will be presenting the Geddes Environment Medal to Tim Flannery, an Australian environmentalist and leading science writer; the provisional date for this event is Wednesday 21st April. And we will be presenting Honorary Fellowship to Lord Jack McConnell, former First Minister of Scotland and now global poverty campaigner; the provisional date for this event is Wednesday 19th May.
Inspiring People
Thank you to the many members and supporters who have stuck with us through the coronavirus disruption to our regular programme of talks. Although it was disappointing that we could not have face-to-face events, the online events proved very popular – more than 10,000 households tuned in to see a great range of excellent speakers, and we were delighted to receive many warm notes of thanks from members who thoroughly enjoyed the new online format.

We are now planning the 2021-22 programme, and expect to have a combination of online and face-to-face events, but this will still of course be subject to any remaining restrictions which are likely to impact access to venues and capacities, and so it is still unclear at this stage whether we will be able to run a full programme of face-to-face talks. If you have any suggestions for speakers though, please email enquiries@rsgs.org.
Chalk Talks
RSGS Chalk Talks are free virtual geography lessons for students working at home. Presented by classroom teachers, and endorsed by the Scottish Association of Geography Teachers, the videos summarise topics in the Scottish Geography curriculum, at Higher or National 5 level. New videos are added as they are created, and we plan to cover 12 topics at Higher and 16 topics at National 5 level.

Over the past month, we have added eight new videos! These cover Lithosphere, Population, Energy and Geographical Skills at Higher, and Weather & Climate, Glaciated Uplands, Population, and Climate Change at National 5. Check them all out at rsgs.org/chalk-talks, and here’s a quick link to the Geographical Skills video for starters!
Young Geographer
Congratulations to our Young Geographer editorial team of Meredith Adams, Kitty Dutton, Kirsten Leggatt, Jenny Keenan and Beth Pearson on the publication of the third edition of our Young Geographer magazine. Commissioned, designed and produced by this editorial team of young women, and focusing on the issue of climate justice, we and the editorial team will be promoting the magazine to different groups and audiences, to try to raise this critical issue further up the policy agenda in the lead-up to COP26 in November.

The magazine is available to read on our website, and please share it with friends and contacts so that we can spread the word.
