  • Founder members to join our Young Geographer Advisory Group, where they will act as the voice of young people at RSGS. Learn more or apply at rsgs.org/vacancies.
  • Volunteers to work at the Fair Maid's House Visitor Centre in Perth, which will open again on Thursday 11th May (12:30PM to 4:00PM). We will then be open every Thursday, Friday & Saturday from 12:30PM to 4:00PM. If you would be interested in joining us we would be delighted to hear from you through email at enquiries@rsgs.org or by phone at 01738 455050.
An Evening with Rory Stewart

On Thursday 3rd August we will be joined by RSGS Livingstone Medallist Rory Stewart for a special talk at the North Inch Community Campus Theatre in Perth. Rory will be reflecting on his experiences of walking across Afghanistan, as detailed in his book The Places in Between. Shackleton's Ship Beneath the Ice
In late March, we were delighted to host the team behind the discovery of Sir Ernest Shackleton’s legendary lost ship Endurance for a sold-out event at Perth Concert Hall, with nearly 1200 people in attendance.

The team recounted their remarkable journey to locate and survey the ship 3,008 metres beneath the ice, which had not been seen since it sank in the Weddell Sea over 100 years ago. To quote our Chief Executive Mike Robinson, "the state of the wreck is so perfect that it is as if the Endurance sank in 1915, and landed on the seabed in 2022."

The event heard from Falklands Maritime Heritage Trust Chair Donald Lamont, Expedition Leader Dr John Shears, Subsea Manager Nico Vincent, and Documentary Director Natalie Hewit- each offered a unique perspective into the ground-breaking Endurance 22 expedition which will be the feature of a documentary in 2024. Leo Hickman FRSGS

At our last Meet the Experts event we were very pleased to award RSGS Honorary Fellowship to Leo Hickman for his role as Director and Editor of Carbon Brief - a UK-based website covering the latest developments in climate science, climate policy and energy policy. Leo previously worked for 16 years as a journalist, editor and author at the Guardian newspaper. Before joining Carbon Brief in 2015, he was WWF-UK’s chief advisor on climate change. At Carbon Brief, he specialises in creating clear, data-driven articles and graphics to help improve the understanding of climate change, both in terms of the science and the policy response.

Inspiring People 2022-23
On Thursday 30th March we hosted the last talk of our Inspiring People talks programme for 2022-23, finishing with adventurer and explorer Alice Morrison in Helensburgh.

Thank you to everyone who joined us at our Inspiring People talks this season, and for your ongoing support throughout as we went back to hosting face-to-face talks for the first time since lockdown. Just some of our highlights this year have been mountaineer and author Cameron McNeish, photographer Colin Prior, cyclist Lee Craigie, filmmaker Libby Penman and kayaker Sal Montgomery at our 13 Local Groups across the country.

We also held six online talks this year on top of our face-to-face talks at Local Groups, with Lewis Pugh, Jojo Mehta, Robin Hanbury-Tenison, Myrtle Simpson, John Blashford-Snell and David Hempleman-Adams. Look out for these talks being posted on our YouTube channel soon.

We now look forward to planning our next programme, and returning later this year in September!
