/// Announcements, Achievements and Awesome Opportunities ///

At a time of political uncertainty, RSGS can be relied upon to provide continuity in a time of change, and to focus on positives, solutions and opportunities. And this newsletter is no exception...

We have news of a special event with Levison Wood that will kick off 2020 in style, as well as details for a remarkable photographic opportunity in Oman!

We're also sharing a blog by our Explorer-in-Residence Luke Robertson on living life with an artificial pacemaker. And, speaking of our Explorers-in-Residence, there is an advert for the new BBC documentary starring Craig Mathieson and the Polar Academy... Have you seen it yet?

Finally, we're rounding up news of our latest Fellows and Medallists, and looking ahead to our Inspiring People talks in November...
Levison Wood at RSGS
Levison Wood, author, photographer and explorer, talks about why we travel, where it all began for him, and how his own adventures as a young adult, and service in the army, equipped him for the far-flung, extreme expeditions that have graced our TV screens and bookshelves over the past six years. He shares with us photographs, videos and anecdotes from life on the road, from hitchhiking to India in his 20s, to Walking the Nile, to his most recent journey, circumnavigating the Arabian Peninsula, and all the adventures in between. Prepare to be surprised, humoured and inspired.

Photographic Opportunity

Our friends at Outward Bound Oman are offering a three-week, all-expenses-paid work visit to Oman to capture captivating promotional images across three of their outdoor courses. The courses will take place in both desert and mountain environments, and will require the photographer to work and 'rough it' in these conditions. This remarkable opportunity is open to anyone, whether an aspiring young high-quality photographer or an established practitioner looking to develop their portfolio.

Outward Bound Oman will provide return flights, accommodation and a living allowance, and pay a sum of £1,000 on successful completion and delivery of the images.

Please contact enquiries@rsgs.org to apply. Please use the subject line: Oman Photographic Grant: FAO James

Fellows and Medallists
Receiving awards this month were (TL) Professor Doug Benn, (TR) Professor Julian Dowdeswell, and (Bottom) Maggie Ewen and Blair White.

Both Professor Benn and Professor Dowdeswell received their research medals for their contributions to glaciology. Between them, their work has been cited over 30,000 times, an achievement which is almost unrivalled amongst professional geographers working in the UK, and which is a testament to their impact.

Combined, volunteers Maggie Ewen and Blair White have spent over 15 years working to support RSGS, completing various tasks in the office and archive, and map collection. They received Honorary Fellowship for their valuable contribution.

Running with my (Artificial) Pacemaker

"During the toughest times in life we all go through, it can be difficult to see though the all-consuming haze. Just remember that we can always take much more from those moments than they can ever take from us." READ

Polar Academy on the BBC
RSGS Explorer-in-Residence Craig Mathieson set up Polar Academy to take shy and unaspiring children and turn them into role models. Each year he chooses ten teenagers, lacking in confidence and low on self-esteem, and takes them on a gruelling ten-day expedition to Greenland...
