We've opened a new art exhibition at our visitor centre, featuring works from rising Scottish talent as well as much-loved names from our country’s art scene.
With the theme of 'nature and landscape', there are pieces by fine artists Claire Harkess and Colin Woolf, well-known Guardian cartoonist Nick Hayes, and young talent Annie Armstrong.
The Fair City, the original impression of Perth by Rob Hain is also on display and for sale. With a price tag of £9,500, we're hoping a local collector, business or trust might be interested, as a percentage of the profits have been pledged to support the Society's work. But even if your budget doesn't stretch this far, it's a great opportunity to see this vibrant original painting.

The exhibition will be open Thursday to Saturday, from 1pm to 4.30pm, until Saturday 26th October.

Lewis Pugh received the first Medal of the month at a stunning event at Perth Concert Hall in early September. Commenting on the award, the endurance swimmer and UN Patron of the Oceans said, "It is a great honour to receive the Mungo Park Medal, and I’m extremely grateful for the recognition of my ocean conservancy work. It is made even more special given the illustrious names who have previously accepted the Medal – Thor Heyerdahl, Lindsey Hilsum, Kate Adie, John Simpson and the Pilots of Solar Impulse, to name but a few."
Next, our prestigious Bartholomew Globe was presented at the FOSS4GUK conference in Edinburgh. Alasdair Rae, a Professor at Sheffield University, received the award for his outstanding geographical research, particularly his innovative and engaging use of map data which has brought public attention to the power of modern cartography, often via Twitter.
At the first meeting of this season's Inspiring People talks series in Ayr, Honorary Fellowships were presented to stalwarts of the Local Group, Jim Stewart (middle) and John Blease (right). Both former geography teachers, they have provided years of dedicated leadership and organisation in support our regional work.

RSGS Climate Summit Report
|
|
Following the Scottish Government's declaration of a Climate Emergency, we pulled together over 30 organisations for a Climate Emergency Summit. Off the back of this, we produced a report detailing the 600 ideas, narrowed down to a few overarching priority themes. Some of the most prominent findings were the need to enact more active travel policy, a need to encourage low carbon demand and capacity through positive investment, and a need to communicate, educate and engage the public, businesses and organisations on this issue and the necessary solutions. The report can be read HERE.

This month there has been a noticeable theme connecting up the Society's work... Orkney.
|
|
At the start of the month, our Chair, Professor Roger Crofts, and Geographer Royal for Scotland, Professor Charles Withers, attended the Orkney Science Festival on behalf of RSGS. Roger gave an interesting and in-depth presentation on Iceland whilst Charles gave audiences a different perspective on mapping Scotland's islands.

Thanks to Cameron Mackay, one of our Young Geographer Magazine Editors, for this fantastic video about Scotland's Arctic Policy Framework which launched in late September in Orkney. Our Chief Executive and Chair were steering group members for the policy throughout its development.

Scotland’s Forgotten Arctic Explorer
|
|
To celebrate the anniversary of Dr John Rae's birthday on Monday 30th September, our Writer-in-Residence has written a blog about the life and struggles of the renowned Orcadian explorer. John was a Member of RSGS joining in 1885, just a year after the Society was founded.

There's a whole bunch of inspiration coming up this October as our Inspiring People talks programme heads into its second month of the season. See Video.
First, Irish nature presenter Colin Stafford-Johnson will be taking audiences down Ireland's coastline. Then it is the turn of OU Professor of Oceanography, Mark Brandon, who was one of the academic advisers on Blue Planet II.
Thereafter, there are talks by world-renowned glaciologist Professor Doug Benn, a visit to Social Bite with Alice Thompson, and a wild adventure along the longest salmon run in the world with The Times Young Writer of the Year, Adam Weymouth.
