/// A Month of Milestones ///

Welcome to this edition of the RSGS e-news. This month has seen several exciting milestones for us, including the official release of some projects that we have been working diligently on over the last year.

In this e-newsletter, we are delighted to be able to announce our most recent releases including our James Croll book and the Climate Solutions MOOC for students.

We feature a blog with our newest recipient of our prestigious Livingstone Medal the Former UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.

We catch up on some of our ongoing projects including our COP26 appeal to support our projects for The Climate Change Conference in November and our Chalk Talk video lessons of which the Higher Geography curriculum is now complete.
James Croll Book
Our new book James Croll and His Adventures in Climate and Time is now available for pre-order! The book tells the story of James Croll, a brilliant-minded Scotsman from Perth who defied poverty and ill-health to become one of the world’s first climate scientists.
The book is written by RSGS Writer-in-residence Jo Woolf and illustrated by Dylan Gibson, who together have expressed Croll’s life and work with energy and colour, engaging readers of all ages.
You can pre-order the book now for July through our online shop at rsgs.org/shop, by post from RSGS HQ (Cheque payable to ‘RSGS’) or by phone on 01738 455050.
Climate Solutions MOOC
Our online Climate Solutions MOOC (Massive Open Online Course) has now been released for students! The MOOC was developed as part of the wider Climate Solutions Course in partnership with The University of Edinburgh, The University of Stirling and The Institute of Directors.  The MOOC version of the course is specifically designed for students in higher education, amongst whom demands for more and better climate change education have been particularly high, and focuses on climate change literacy and positive solutions. The MOOC is accessible through our website at https://www.rsgs.org/climate-solutions.

Ban Ki-moon Livingstone Award

Former UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon is the most recent recipient of the prestigious RSGS Livingstone Medal. Mr Ban was awarded the medal in recognition of his positive contribution and long-standing dedication to global humanitarian issues. Mr Ban received the medal at his Foundation headquarters in South Korea and sent the RSGS a video message expressing his thanks stating
“It is with great humility and gratitude that I receive the Livingstone Medal, an award with such a rich and distinguished history”
In his message Mr Ban also referred to COP26 in Glasgow and expressed the importance of the fight against climate change, and the vital efforts of meeting the Sustainable Development Goals. You can learn more through our new blog piece at: https://www.rsgs.org/blog/ban-ki-moon-rsgs-livingstone-medallist.

COP26 Appeal
With the approach of COP26 in Glasgow later this year, this is a hugely significant time for the climate change movement. At the RSGS, we are undertaking several exciting projects for COP26 to achieve three main goals:
  • To promote climate action from a wide range of people across Scotland.
  • To give a voice to those who are traditionally less heard.
  • To promote Scotland’s leading approach to tackling climate change to inspire others globally.
To achieve these goals, we have launched a fundraising appeal (www.rsgs.org/appeal/cop26). Please donate to support our work. Thank you to those who have donated so far and helped us pursue our COP26 goals!
Chalk Talks
We are delighted to say that with the help of a small group of fantastic teachers, we have officially completed all of the Chalk Talks for the Higher Geography curriculum! The last couple of lessons were on Development and Health, Climate Change and River Basin Management. We have also completed 11 Chalk Talks for National 5 covering topics within Physical Environments, Human Environments, Global Issues and Skills. Thank you to all who donated to the Helping Hands for Schools appeal, making the project possible in the first place; allowing us to create accessible and engaging lessons for students at home.
All Chalk Talks can be watched for free through our website (www.rsgs.org/chalk-talks) and on our YouTube channel.
