An Evening With Jonathon Porritt
|
|
With global issues such as climate change and biodiversity looming large, as well as geopolitical concerns surrounding the fate of democracy, environmentalist and author Jonathon Porritt considers whether this moment, early in 2021, is an important crossroads for the human race. But it won't be all doom and gloom; he will also reflect on how we tackle and solve our most pressing challenges, and why there is reason to be hopeful for the year ahead.
The talk begins at 7.30pm; tickets are £5 for RSGS Members, U18s and Students, or £8 for visitors.

Climate Emergency Summits
|
|
Whilst the world’s focus is quite rightly on resolving the current pandemic, the climate emergency has not gone away. To this end, we have continued to hold regular Climate Emergency Summits over recent months, each time working with a different partner organisation. Most recently, these high-level meetings have brought together leading experts in sustainability to provide solutions across procurement (with Zero Waste Scotland), transport (with Paths for All), and land management (with the Scottish Land Commission and NatureScot). We are now planning further Summits, including one for journalists to explore how best this sector can report the science and solutions around the climate emergency. Following these online events, we publish our findings and submit these to Scottish Government.

The RSGS Chalk Talks, which have been endorsed by the Scottish Association of Geography Teachers, are free virtual geography lessons for students stuck at home during the coronavirus pandemic. Each video summarises a topic in the Scottish Geography curriculum, from glaciers to coasts, cities to deserts, and much in between. Videos will be added as they are created, with the hope to produce as many as possible over the coming weeks...

This newsletter is the last I will write as Communications Officer at RSGS, before I begin a new chapter working for SCIAF in March. The past 3.5 years have been truly life-changing: from trekking across Oman with Outward Bound, to producing adventure and educational films for the Society, to helping arrange events with some of the world's most remarkable broadcasters, scientists and adventurers.
Working at RSGS has been a real privilege, and I would like to take this opportunity to thank you all for reading and sharing the Society's inspiring content throughout my time here. It goes without saying that I hope to remain engaged with the Society's work and in touch with the many friends I have made in the years to come.
RSGS will begin advertising the Communications role next week, with details made available on the Society's website. Once again, many thanks, and very best wishes for the future.
James Cave, RSGS Communications Officer
On Thursday 11th March at 7pm, James will appear on BBC2 Scotland's Adventure Show with his latest film, 'On The Edge of Nowhere' – a fitting end to his time working with RSGS!
